Thirteen Salmon Family Center Volunteer Opportunities
Thirteen Salmon Family Center is our daytime emergency shelter for families with children. The center serves the same families that stay with us at the Goose Hollow Family Shelter each evening, in addition to 10 people from the Family Winter Shelter, and 8 people from the Common Cup shelter. Thirteen Salmon operates from 8:00am-6:00pm 7 days a week. We offer daily volunteer positions at Thirteen Salmon each day, as well as a special opportunity on Saturdays. Being a volunteer at Thirteen Salmon requires an open mind and a certain amount of flexibility. Because the shelter is a “drop in center” there is no way for staff to know who will be there at any given time. There may be a day when you come to volunteer during a time when there are no guests at the shelter, you may come another day and find the shelter full of people. It is important to understand that there are many tasks that need to be completed each day. Even if there is no one at the shelter, we rely on our volunteers to help keep the shelter an organized and warm place. There will be many ways you can help at the shelter, no matter what the situation is that day. Please see our volunteer positions below to learn how you can help at Thirteen Salmon.
If you would like to learn more about the volunteer positions and about the shelter you can look at the PHFS Volunteer Handbook, and don’t forget to read our volunteer rules here!. Before you can volunteer at the Thirteen Salmon Family Center you will need to attend one of our volunteer orientations.

Kid’s Activity Host
The Kids Activity Host is a special position that is only open during times when adult classes are being offered at the shelter. When an adult class is scheduled this position will be available for volunteers to come and spend time with the children at the shelter. Unlike any other positions at Thirteen Salmon, you will work with other volunteers and the shelter manager to provide kid-friendly play while parents are in a different room taking a class.
The times and dates for this position vary but are usually scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. The exact schedule will be available on the volunteer calendar as classes are scheduled.
The Lunch Host shift is from 11:00am - 1:00pm, seven days a week. The lunch host will prepare a meal using the food that we have at the shelter for our guests. Occasionally Lunch Hosts choose to prepare a special lunch item at their homes and bring it in for lunch, you are welcome to do this if you would like but it is not necessary. Lunch Hosts assist families in getting food for their children and help clean up and run the dishwasher after the meal. Lunch Hosts also organize our cabinets and refrigerator by removing any expired food they might find.
The Afternoon Host position takes place from 3:00pm-6:00pm Monday through Saturday. Tasks that you might do while volunteering in this position could be helping to organize and sanitize parts of the shelter, sorting donations, helping the manager with daily shelter tasks, setting out the afternoon snack, facilitating kid- friendly play and activities, or helping our school aged guests with their homework.
Every morning the Opening Host arrives at the shelter when it opens at 8:00am to greet guests and facilitate a welcoming atmosphere. Tasks that you might do while volunteering in this position could be helping to organize and sanitize parts of the shelter, sorting donations, helping the manager with daily shelter tasks, setting out the morning snack and making coffee, or facilitating kid- friendly play and activities to our preschool aged guests. This volunteer position ends at 11:00am
